Sustainability

We are serious when we say we "Improve your garden, without costing the earth."

Sustainability is at the very heart of The Garden Editor. But what does that mean in practice? Day-to-day, that looks like:

Using peat-free compost: Extracting peat destroys wetland ecosystems and releases trapped carbon, speeding up global warming. We prioritise sourcing plants from nurseries that are completely peat-free, or grown-on peat-free.

We actively promote and educate on pesticide-free and weedkiller-free approaches to gardening: This protects local ecosystems, ensures your garden stays free of toxic chemical residues, and prevents dangerous chemicals from entering the food chain where they can poison pollinators like bees.

Closed loop plastic recycling: In our design work, we take back plastic pots to our supplier nurseries, for them to be reused time and again. We promote bare root and rootball planting in the dormant seasons, and provide plastic-free deer guards for  native deciduous hedging.

Low carbon emissions transport and delivery: Claire travels by electric vehicle  powered by solar panels and backed up by batteries and renewable energy. We work with suppliers to group and minimse deliveries to reduce transport emissions.

Sustainable travel: For edits outside our immediate catchment area, we offer online edits or travel to you by train or other sustainable transport options.

Supporting the next generation: Our young labourers are brilliant at working with us on physical tasks such as mulching, digging and planting. We pay them above the national minimum wage and at the full adult rate (not the young persons' rate).

Supporting the wider community: We volunteer our time, knowledge and plants to community initiatives such as Basingstoke Communtiy Radio, the Test Valley Mens' Shed, Overton Community Centre, Whitchurch Silk Mill and sponsor local events..

Sustainable use of digital tech: While tech is brilliant to support our business, given the environmental cost we do not use AI other than for small menial admin tasks and only where it adds value. We are a human powered business, and want to stay that way.
